Fiji Police Commissioner Esala Teleni has denied any knowledge of a letter from an officer claiming he and his deputy were “planning a coup” against the army commander.

A television report last night revealed that Teleni had ordered the transfer of Assistant Police Commissioner (Crime) Nasir Ali to Levuka Town as a result of a letter he allegedly wrote to Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

Teleni adds that reports of Ali being demoted to take up the position of station officer in Levuka comes as a surprise to him.

Teleni told fijilive that Ali asked him for 10 days leave and he has endorsed it.

“I was surprised when reporters started calling me and asking whether Ali has been demoted,” he said.

“He applied for a normal leave”.

Deputy Police Commissioner Eroni Antonio, however, confirmed Ali’s demotion last night.
