BFB: There is no excuse for this sort of stupid behaviour. Threats of this nature will NOT help return the country to normality. Tourism should be a growing industry for Fiji. Irresponsible actions like this provide yet another set back to what used to be a peace loving, tropical paradise.

Bomb threat during elections forum

A PUBLIC forum which discussed issues surrounding the next general elections was disrupted by police following a bomb threat at mid day.

The Holiday Inn which hosted a private meeting of three political leaders including ousted Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party members, academics, diplomats, representatives from the private sector and the non-government organisation was vacated at close to midday.

Hotel staff said it was the second bomb scare in a span of two days.

Yesterday guests and tourists were evacuated at around midday when the hotel was warned of a bomb in the building and a similar threat occurred today.

Organisers of the forum Pacific Concern Resource Centre and the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity suspended the second half of the seminar to a later date.

A press conference with Mr Qarase, former Supervisor of Elections Semesa Karavaki, National Federation Party secretary general Pramod Rae and acting leader of the United Peoples Party Mick Beddoes was in progress when hotel staff and police urged everyone out of the hotel.
